Isle Royale
Isle Royale is a large 'wilderness' island in Lake Superior which is a National Park. There are no roads on the island and the only way to get there is by ferry, your own boat or to fly in on a sea-plane.
The trail walking on the island is superb through woodland, rocky bluffs, ponds and small lakes and wild shores. All the while (in mid August a least) you only have to stretch your arm out from the narrow trail to pick superb wild raspberries or the larger thimble berries.
Wild life abounds especially squirrels (pic) who don't seem to fear humans at all. Moose are common on the island and there are wolves, but these are not often seen by visitors.
There are remnants of 19th century mines in some parts of the island (pic) and also of small fishing communities.
