June 2006

Lake Superior, USA

Gypsy Dancer's first sail under her new owner. The vital cottar pin for the back-stay arrived early on Thursday morning 29th June. We left Washburn around 1.00 PM after a short test sail. With variable winds we moto-sailed until we reached the Apostle Islands off Bayfield. Great sailing through and round the islands before turning south west. Cornucopia is a 'quaint' little harbour in a shallow river with a small marina off Siskiwit Bay, Lake Superior.

The following morning, the 30th, I reversed carefully out of the narrow marina round 9.30 am. Luckily Gypsy Dancer seems to reverse very predictably. Zero wind as we motored past Roman Point (pic). Later a light wind picked up from dead astern so we motor-sailed with just the main sail, making 6.8 - 7.3 knots, 6 of which were provided by the engine.

Superior Harbour entrance breakwaters are marked by a large lighthouse (pic) which helps to identify it against the hills and city behind. Arrived at the Barkers Island Marina Service dock around 5.15 pm.
